The Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) is an emerging Internet
standard for describing and distributing three dimensional objects
and virtual worlds across the World Wide Web. Version 2.0 of the
VRML standard was completed on August 4 of this year. VRML 2.0
allows the creation of dynamic, interactive 3D worlds that include
animation, sound, and even movies. I will give a thumbnail
description of what, exactly, VRML 2.0 is and how it can be used,
describe the process that led to the adoption of VRML 2.0 as a
standard, and will talk briefly about how I think the VRML standard
will evolve in the near future.
Gavin Bell is the chief architect of the VRML 2.0 standard. He
was the primary author of the VRML 1.0 standard, and is one of the
eight members of the VRML Architecture Group. Gavin was hired by
Silicon Graphics, Inc. after completing his bachelors degree in
Computer Science from Princeton University in 1988. At Silicon
Graphics he was a key member of the Open Inventor team, defining
and implementing the Open Inventor 3D graphics programming toolkit.
Gavin recently left Silicon Graphics and moved to Madison, Wisconsin,
where he is writing a book about VRML and starting a company to do
VRML-related software on personal computers.
