Agent-Based Modeling for
Homeland Security and National Defense

Michael J. North

Tuesday July 27th 2004 at 7:00pm
College of DuPage, SRC 1450AB

Abstract

Agent-based modeling is a new approach to simulation that focuses on "bottom up" system representation as opposed to more traditional "top down" methods. Agent-based modeling is used to simulate the actions of individual decision makers such as people, groups or organizations. The Argonne National Laboratory Decision and Information Sciences Division Center for Complex Adaptive Agent Systems Simulation (CCAASS) is actively applying agent-based modeling to a variety of pressing homeland security and national defense issues. The talk will introduce agent-based modeling and will provide an overview of some of CCAASS' work.

Speaker Bio

Michael J. North is the Deputy Director of the Center for Complex Adaptive Agent Systems Simulation (CCAASS) within the Decision and Information Sciences Division of Argonne National Laboratory. He is an internationally recognized leader and speaker in the agent-based modeling community. Argonne is operated by the University of Chicago for the United States Department of Energy. Mr. North has fifteen years of experience developing advanced modeling and simulation applications for various branches of the federal government and several international agencies. In addition, Mr. North has published more than twenty-five papers in refereed journals and international conferences. Michael North is one of the lead Repast Java developers and is a member of the ROAD Board of Directors. Mr. North holds an M.S. in Computer Systems Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology as well as degrees in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering Science and an MBA. More information on Mr. North's work can be found at http://www.cas.anl.gov/.
