Internet novices would find it difficult to comprehend there used to be a time not so long ago when all email was legitimate. But just a little over 10 years ago, the rest of the world discovered e-mail and the Internet has never been the same. Since 1995, the volume of illegitimate email received in our inboxes has grown to where it is now estimated that 80 to 85% of all email is unsolicited bulk email (UBE); or what's more commonly known as "spam".
Corporate IT departments, ISPs and individual users are all trying to figure out how to identify and then remove this cancer from our mailboxes.
This talk will discuss one open source spam filtering solution called the Anti-Spam SMTP Proxy. We'll briefly explore the art and science of spam filtering, look at the strategies employed by ASSP, and then review its real world effectiveness.
