Factoring has been at the center of every programming initiative since before dinosaurs, like when Rick and Burke started programming. Programmers spend most of their time dealing with the consequences of structure. Factoring is the method by which that structure is defined. Rick and Burke are going to go over why factoring is important, how to recognize badly factored code and how to refactor it. How to implement factoring and code reuse in Perl, and how Perl modules fit into this scheme.
Rick Hoselton has been a programmer for 35 years. He spent 17 of those years building and maintaining a large online systems, including Telescan, Wall Street City, and CNBC.com. Rick is a partner with H&H Consulting of Houston TX, and is currently on assignment at a hedge fund here in Chicago. Burke Gallagher, has been programming professionally for 30 years. Over that time he has used most major languages, methodologies, and styles and several minor ones. He has been working with Perl for 7 years. He currently uses Perl to maintain data for a large downtown hedge fund.
