VMWare in Public Computing/Deploy

Steven McGrath

Tuesday September 23rd 2008 at 7:00pm
Wheaton, Illinois Institute of Technology - Rice Campus, Room 103

Abstract

Public Computing is not often discussed. It is thought of as a dumping ground for script kiddies and hackers. In contrast to that perception, we will be talking about the CUGNet project. CUGNet has been successful in helping the community by providing an environment for people to learn networking basics, programming, and system administration. Steve will give the background behind the CUGNet project, it's goals, and dig deep into how it was constructed and designed, as well as some ideas as to where he is planning for it to go.

Bio

Steven has been working in Network Security for the past 7 years both attacking and defending networks using open source tools and a healthy dose of scripting. Also as one of the main contacts for DefCon 312, ChiSNORT, and ISSA-Chicago, he is an active member in the Chicago technology community.

Currently Steve has been spending most of his time leading the CUGNet project, a public computing platform designed to promote learning and innovation. CUGNet provides hosting, shell accounts, and project space for various non-profit entities and individuals. The focus of CUGNet is to allow an open platform for users to experiment with and learn. CUGNet also hosts a variety of community sites, many currently within the Chicago area.
