Samba in the SOHO/SMB Environment

Abstract

Samba is an Open Source Software package that provides seamless file and print sharing functionality between Unix/Linux/*BSD hosts and clients/servers using the SMB protocol and CIFS filesystem. The presentation will discuss the functionalities provided by the Samba software and cover scenarios of using Samba as file/print server in a SOHO environment as well as in a SMB environment.

Speaker Bio

Arun Khan has been in the Telecom and the IT industry for more than 20 years. Before joining Surja IT Academy, an IT training company focusing on new and emerging applications based on the Open Source technology, he worked as an independent consultant focusing on IT infrastructure technology.

Prior to this he was with AT&T Bell Labs (now Lucent) for more than 10 years. At Bell Labs, he was involved in all the phases of software development of their flagship product - the 5ESS digital switch; writing requirements, designing, integration, project management, and support. AT&T Bell Labs stationed him in the Netherlands for two years, to be part of their 5ESS International project management team to coordinate all aspects of the software release cycles between three major R&D centers.

Arun has been using Linux since 1995 and is familiar with the major distributions. He also has interest in the *BSD Open Source OSs. He has given presentations on topics related to Open Source Technology and computer and network security, at IT user groups in the Chicagoland area. He has also conducted workshops at the Oakton Community College for their Adult Continuing Education Program.

Arun has a MS in Systems Engineering from U of I, Chicago and a B. Tech in EE from IIT Madras, India. He also has a Linux certification conferred by the Linux Professional Institute, a global leader in Linux certification.

Arun is the co-chair of the Linux Special Interest Group at the Chicago Computer Society.
